FAB Forecasting Enhancement...

Empowering Managers to Take Charge of Their Futures.

Forecasting and budgeting have long been the backbone of effective business planning. Traditionally, these tasks were handled by finance teams or senior executives, often leaving managers with limited insight or control over their department’s future. This approach can create gaps between strategic goals and day-to-day operations, slowing decision-making and reducing accountability. To address this, we have introduced new functionality to our FAB (Forecasting and Budgeting) system that allows managers to forecast their own futures departmentally. This change puts the power of planning directly in the hands of those who know their teams best.

Why Managers Should Own Their Forecasting

Managers are closest to the operational realities of their departments. They understand the challenges, resources, and opportunities better than anyone else. When forecasting and budgeting are centralized, managers often receive top-down targets that may not reflect their actual capacity or market conditions. This disconnect can lead to unrealistic goals or missed opportunities.

Allowing managers to forecast their own futures means:

  • Greater accuracy: Managers can input data based on real-time insights and frontline knowledge.

  • Increased accountability: When managers create their own forecasts, they take ownership of outcomes.

  • Faster adjustments: Managers can quickly update forecasts as conditions change without waiting for approvals.

  • Better alignment: Departmental forecasts can be integrated into company-wide plans more smoothly.

How Our FAB System Supports Manager-Led Forecasting

Our enhanced FAB system is designed to be user-friendly and flexible, enabling managers to build their own forecasts without needing deep financial expertise. Key features include:

  • Intuitive interfaces that guide managers through the forecasting process step-by-step.

  • Consistent templates tailored to department structures.

  • Real-time data integration so forecasts reflect the latest sales, expenses, and performance trends.

  • On screen live entry and comparisons that let managers test different assumptions and see potential impacts.

  • A Collaborated effort allows managers to contribute forecasts with finance teams and leadership for feedback.

For example, new and used sales managers can use the system to project monthly outcomes based on model run outs and run ins, adjusting for seasonality or new product launches. Meanwhile, Service and Parts managers can rely on working days to speculate margin and volume tweaks to forecast profit targets based on real maths quickly and easily.

Practical Benefits Seen in Early Adopters

Companies that have adopted manager-led forecasting report several tangible benefits:

  • Improved forecast accuracy by up to 20% due to closer alignment with operational realities.

  • Reduced budgeting cycle time by 30% as managers can submit forecasts directly without multiple review layers.

  • Stronger engagement from managers who feel more connected to company goals and empowered to influence outcomes.

  • Better resource allocation as forecasts highlight where investments or cuts are needed most.

One dealership shared how their departmental managers used the FAB system to expedite the forecast process, empowering them to make better management decisions where that same business acknowledged that the Budgeting cycle was "too hard" to bother with in the past.

Tips for Managers to Make the Most of Forecasting Tools

To get the best results from forecasting and budgeting, managers should:

  • FAB uses historical data as a baseline but adjust for upcoming changes like market shifts or new initiatives.

  • FAB now involves team members to make their own insights into specific areas such as sales trends, market pressures and expense creep.

  • FAB facilitates the regular Review of forecasts to ensure that comparative analysis remains relevant.

  • Communicate assumptions clearly so others understand the basis of projections.

  • Leverage scenario planning to prepare for different possible futures and reduce risks.

Supporting a Culture of Forward Thinking

Empowering managers to forecast their own futures is more than just a software upgrade. It requires a cultural shift where planning is seen as a shared responsibility. Organizations should encourage open communication, provide training on forecasting best practices, and recognize managers who demonstrate strong planning skills.

When managers take charge of their department’s future, they become active partners in the company’s success. This approach builds confidence, sharpens decision-making, and creates a more agile organization ready to respond to change.

How to deliver this feature to your team?

Simply reach out to our support team at itksupport@cdsonline.com.au and advise us which Manager(s) should have this feature enabled.

We will add the FAB features directly to their log ins, and they can immediately review our "How To / Help" videos and get cracking on their contribution to the prepared forecast.

The process of "Preparing" any forecast will remain the task of the Financial Controller or Accountant.

Existing security will automatically apply in terms of what departments they would have access to and you now have a collaborated team effort in place to expedite the process.

Once all Forecast data is in place, the FC/Accountant can convert the forecast into a published Budget for detailed comparative analysis of your daily, monthly and yearly progress.
